Fall 2025 Call: The proceeds of the Fall 2025 Cascadia Chalice Lighters Call will be applied to support the Hewett Hopper Raible Fund for Ministry, managed by Cascadia Growth Fund.

The Hewett Hopper Raible Fund regularly receives applications from congregations aiming to establish themselves as a teaching congregation, or to establish professional ministry where there’s been none. This Chalice Lighters grant will keep growing UU ministry in the Pacific Northwest.

Here is more information on the Hewett Hopper Raible Fund:

Completing a congregational internship is a required part of an aspiring UU minister’s journey to ministerial fellowship. Many seminarians are parents and/or partners, and thus may be geographically bound when looking for internships.  Interns expect to be paid–at least a stipend, but few of our local congregations have the resources to support internships.

For many years, a fund named for three renowned Pacific Northwest ministers, the Rev. Dr. Phillip Hewett, Rev. Dr. C. Leon Hopper, and the Rev. Dr. Peter Raible, (the HHR fund) has supported internships by providing awards of up to half the cost of a one-year internship.

In 2023, a Chalice Lighter grant to the Hewett Hopper Raible Fund helped two congregations with new ministries:

  • the expansion of a new ministry to support a sudden increase in growth at the Pacific Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Astoria, Oregon; and
  • a second year of a ministerial internship at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Willamette Falls.

Opportunities for Unitarian Universalist leaders and active members to build relationships beyond their own congregations have become limited due to the dissolution of the PNWD and the pandemic. The Cascadia Board believes that such relationships give lay leaders a sense of belonging to something larger than themselves, reduces feelings of isolation, and increases the exchange of ideas that help keep our programs and services fresh and exciting.

During the pandemic, Cascadia encouraged collaborative proposals and funded three creative, successful initiatives. Each of these brought representatives of three or more congregations together. The Cascadia Board is committed to promoting more engagements like these between congregations.
